Editing Genie offers three different types of edits: developmental edit (manuscript critique), full line edit, and copy editing. Because these terms mean different things to different editors and authors, please see the breakdown below for more information on each service.

Developmental Edit/Manuscript Critique

Cost: $100

This edit is a big picture critique of your novel or nonfiction book.* Once I have read through your manuscript, you will receive an editorial letter that addresses the strengths and weaknesses of your work. The letter will include suggestions for revisions, and will also address any concerns you may be worried about.

For fiction authors this includes:

  • Characterization
  • Story arc
  • Plot
  • World building
  • Voice
  • Pacing

For nonfiction authors this includes:

  • Voice
  • Pacing
  • Gaps in information
  • Clarity of ideas
  • Readability

* All genres are accepted for both fiction and nonfiction.

Full Line Edit

Cost: $.01/word

The line edit is what I like to call a beta-read on steroids. In this edit, I will make suggestions to strengthen plot, pacing, character, and clarity, as well as address clunky writing, awkward structure, word choice and tone.

For this critique, I will work off an electronic file (a Word document or a Pages document). All changes will be highlighted and tracked, and editorial changes or comments will be left via notes in the margins.

For fiction authors this includes:

  • Awkward phrases
  • Showing vs. telling
  • Passive verbs and clichés
  • Lack of characterization
  • Lack of description
  • Awkward transitions
  • Info dumps
  • Word choice

For nonfiction authors this includes:

  • Awkward phrases
  • Showing vs. telling
  • Passive verbs and cliches
  • Authorial voice
  • Ease of readability
  • Edit for clarity
  • Inconsistencies
  • Sentence structure and clarity

Copy Edit

Cost: $.005/word

So you’ve whipped your manuscript into shape and you’re ready to put the final polish on it before you send it out into the world. This edit will make sure that your manuscript is clean and typo free.

The copy edit will:

  • Correct spelling, grammar, punctuation, and other typographical errors.
  • Make sure names and styles are consistent throughout the work.
